What is PCI DSS certification?

If you complete your purchase through a direct payment gateway, Shopify will store your credit card information. This information is encrypted in accordance with the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI-DSS). All direct payment gateways comply with the PCI-DSS standard, which is governed by the PCI Security Standards Council, resulting from the joint efforts of companies such as Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover.

The PCI DSS (Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard) is a global security standard that protects banking data on the internet. It was developed by the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards Council (PCI SSC), which was founded by major payment card brands such as Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover.

Before PCI DSS compliance was required, each of these companies had its own security program, which nonetheless had similar objectives. They therefore united around a common standard, the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard, also known as PCI DSS.

Who needs to be PCI DSS certified?

PCI DSS compliance is mandatory for any entity that stores, processes, or transmits credit card payment information. This includes merchants, payment service providers, financial institutions, and technology service providers.

Complying with PCI DSS standards reduces your risks of data breaches, fraud, or damage to your reputation. It also strengthens customer trust in your e-commerce site and promotes the growth of card-based transactions.

The requirements of the PCI-DSS standard ensure the secure processing of credit card data by my store and its service providers. For more information, please consult Shopify's Terms of Service.

In general, the third-party providers I use will only collect, use, and disclose your information to the extent necessary to perform the services they provide to me.

However, certain third-party service providers, such as payment gateways and other payment transaction processors, have their own privacy policies regarding the information I am required to provide to them for your purchase transactions.
For these providers, I recommend that you read their privacy policies carefully so that you can understand how they will handle your personal information.

Remember that some providers may be located in or have facilities located in a jurisdiction different from yours or mine. Therefore, if you decide to proceed with a transaction that involves the services of a third-party provider, your information may be governed by the laws of the jurisdiction in which that provider is located or the jurisdiction in which its facilities are located.

For example, if you are located in Canada and your transaction is processed by a payment gateway located in the United States, your personal information used to complete the transaction could be disclosed under United States legislation.
Once you leave my store's website or are redirected to a third-party website or application, you are no longer governed by this Privacy Policy or by my website's Terms and Conditions of Sale and Use.
You may be led to leave my website by clicking on certain links present on my site. I assume no responsibility for the privacy practices of these other sites and recommend that you read their privacy policies carefully. My store uses Google Analytics to help me learn about who visits my website and which pages are viewed. To protect your personal data, I take reasonable precautions and follow industry best practices to ensure that it is not lost, misused, accessed, disclosed, altered, or destroyed inappropriately.

If you provide me with your credit card information, it will be encrypted using SSL security protocol and stored with AES-256 encryption, and will be governed by Shopify Payments. Although no method of transmission over the Internet or electronic storage is 100% secure, I comply with all PCI-DSS requirements and implement additional generally accepted industry standards. If I make changes to the content of this policy, I will notify you here that it has been updated, so that you are aware of what information I collect, how I use it, and under what circumstances, if any, I disclose it.

The information I request from you is solely intended to help me understand you better; I use it to tailor the content of my site to my customer base profile. This ensures I can always serve you better. Your email address will only be used to send you information about my special offers and news to highlight on my site.
